Professor Ranganathan , Karnataka = Jose , Cherai
I like meeting new people. This world never seizes to amuse me, with its so many different types of interesting characters that I come across. My last journey back home was no different.
“Are you an engineer??”
I was goofing around the railway station, spending my time since the platform for my train was yet to be announced. May be my gentleman looks and smart attire made him ask the question or is it that he made out that I am a dumb just by having a glance at me?
I looked around to get the source of this question, to find a lean tall fair elderly person. He was cleanly dressed, in old but neat dark brown trousers and a white shirt with dark vertical stripes. His weak, thin frame and saggy eyes resembled a habitual drunkard. Just to confirm what I heard, I gave him a quizzed look.
“Are you an engineer?” he repeated.
“Mmm, nope “, I quite didn’t like that introduction, so thought of a negative answer to see his reaction.
“You know the bus number to reach Indian Institute of Science Madras?” My answer didn’t bother him it seems.
“Oh yes ” , in that short time I picturised in my mind , a genius son, who got selection in IIT madras , and this old father visiting him for the first time , getting directions to reach his son at the institute. I continued, “1 series buses will take you to Adyar , but am not sure if it is going towards IIT . You do one thing, either catch a 1 series bus, get down at Adyar signal get an auto to reach IIT or else enquire with someone else to get the correct bus number “. I completed.
After this, he extended his right hand to me and said, “I am professor Ranganathan , from Karnataka” .In my mind I was happy to know that what I thought about this guy was more or less correct .A professor’s son in IIT is a perfect thing to happen.
Am good at guessing people!!!.
Me too extended my hand and shook hands, with a friendly smile. But the very next line was a googly for me. He continued, “I was travelling and I lost all my bag and money….”.
Without him completing his sentence, I withdrew my hand and said “Bye” and turned around and left the place. I heard him say a “Bye” and as I watched, he was moving towards the crowd to find the next prospective engineer who could help him reach IIT with some money. He turned out to be a small time fraud.
Hmmm, so much for my ability to guess people.
The very next thing I did was to get a bottle of mineral water. Got the bottle, paid the money and turned around to hear another celestial question.
“Are you a Malayali?” (Found any resemblance?!!!)
Again, I gave a quizzed look at the person with the question. This time it is a young man, may be around 22-24 years, dressed neatly and with a travel bag on his right shoulder. He was clean shaven and fair. He had this slightly reddish eyes and tired look in his face which you can suggest for a person who had an overnight journey .But I would like to attribute that to a drug addict (That is what came to my mind, may be the previous experience influenced me) .He was shorter than me. Incidentally, my cousin who is a Sub Inspector with the police, once told me never to trust short guys as they tend be good liars.
“Are you a Malayali?” he repeated, for which I said” Yes, how can I help you?”.
Rest of the conversation happened in Malayalam .His conversation was full of incomplete sentence and he appeared to be fully confused and out of order. This is the way the conversation went or this is the sequence he narrated.
“You know anyone in police? Police is asking me to surrender my mobile for money. I was travelling and I lost my purse while sleeping. I have complained to the Police, but they said you won’t get it back. I reached here today morning “.
At this point, I was confused and wanted to know what he was up to.”How much you want?” I think it was a pretty straight question. He stopped for a moment and said, “I don’t want money, can you buy me a ticket to Vishakhapatnam? I have got 74 rupees and the ticket is 104 “.
So it is the same case, MONEY . But this time I was not sure whether his request is genuine or not. And again, he is a Malayali . Come on, how can I not help a fellow Malayali?.
I decided to know more about him and asked his job and name. He said he is working in a sole rethreading company in Vishakhapatnam and he is from Ernakulam. Again I asked his name for which he replied, Jose.
Since I was familiar with Ernakulam I asked, “Where in Ernakulam?”
“Cherai ” was his answer.
Hmmm, that is far from what you say is Ernakulam. Whatever, I decided to give him Rs.50, just in case he is in real need of help. And again this is the second incident, if the good Lord has decided me to lose some money that day, better be 50 Rs.
I gave him the money and said, “Jose, you are the second person I am meeting today with similar request”.
For this he had a baffled expression and asked “What do you mean?”.
I said, “Leave it” and wished him good luck and walked away.
Later, after 5 – 10 minutes I went to ticket counter to check on “Jose”.
He was nowhere to be found. He might have run to get his daily dose of grass.
So he tricked me. Somehow I don’t have any regrets. Considering Rs.50 is not that a high amount to feel bad on losing and feeling glad that I learnt a very good lesson for so cheap a fee.
World is full of interesting people, I repeat. Meet them and learn life lessons the hardest way, i.e., HEAD ON!!

My First!!
My first ??? What first ??
Well..
First well???
No No , I was trying to explain about my first “meeting the girl” or “pennukaanal” , the custom to meet the prospective wifey of my life. Personally I am against going around meeting girls, interviewing them and to marry the supposedly BEST (BEAST)!! . Strictly I was thinking of a single so called pennukanal in my life. But, this just happened, I can’t explain more. An awkward experience is all what I would say about it.
Leaving behind what happened, and things that are above our control. Last weekend was the best that has happened to me for a long time. It was a long weekend, was at home, had lots of home food and a refreshing time.
Got to see a short chassis Jeep. Most probably a military disposal one, with military green paint and a jerry can to the left fender. Loved it at the first sight itself!! . Was driven by an old gentleman and was KLZ registered. My search for a jeep is still on!!
